Project Brief
Select an object that has significance to someone in your life. Research both the object and the person and conduct an interview. Then, create an illustration featuring the object. Design three patterns that incorporate the object, producing six fashion illustrations that visually tell the person's story.
Background
The object I chose was my roommate’s necklace. Her name is Sabrina, and her family is from Lebanon and Armenia. The necklace was a gold plate with her name represented in Arabic. After interviewing her it was clear that for her wearing it was a reminder of her family and of her home as it is a very popular gift and piece of jewelry to wear in the Middle East.
I wanted to bring a nostalgic sense of home into the illustration and into the fashion illustration. Then I found postcards from the 1970s of Lebanon and decided I wanted to use these images as a base for the project. With the postcards I pulled photos of traditional Armenian and Lebanese woman and deconstructed their garments to fit onto models I chose to place in the image. From there it was a matter of utilizing adobe’s capabilities by applying pattern, stretching, and cropping different shapes to fit the models.
Tools:
Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
Patterns
Created with the image of the necklace. I wanted to utilize and take inspiration from persian rugs and their intricate and beautiful design. I weaved the necklace into these beautiful shapes and design that are common throughout the region of Lebanon and the Middle East.
